New BXP ESD cups move batteries to safer ground

Published 6/11/2024

BXP ESD is a new series of modular suction cups, developed to protect sensitive components in batteries, fuel cells and electronics from the negative effects of electrostatic discharge during handling. "We are proud to offer this useful innovation to our automotive customers in a time when their sector is booming", says Anders Falk, Automotive Product Manager at Piab Vacuum Automation Division.

Electro-Static Discharge (ESD), a sudden flow of built-up electricity between two objects, is a negative side effect for many manufacturing industries. Apart from being a hazard for workers, ESD can cause damage in sensitive battery components or electronics, ultimately leading to malfunctions or failures.

The problem is generally solved through the use of external anti-static equipment connected to the factory interior and machinery. Additions that ultimately lead to higher costs and maintenance, but also may be tough to apply in already tight spaces. It may also restrict machine movement.

To help the customers overcome this, Piab has developed a new suction cup series where the ESD protective technology is built in.

"BXP ESD is a new type of modular suction cup built to handle sensitive objects in any battery or fuel cell manufacturing process. It's made of ESD DURAFLEX, which is a semi-conductive polyurethane developed to enable grounding of lifted objects. Grounding ensures that build-up of static electricity is safely dissipated", says Anders Falk, Automotive Product Manager at Piab Vacuum Automation Division.

Regardless of size chosen, the new BXP ESD cup covers a surface resistance range of 10^6 to 10^9 Ω (Ohm), which ensures the safety and integrity of batteries, fuel cells, and electronic components in any handling situation. A span tested and approved by an independent institute.

Apart from the anti-static qualities, ESD DURAFLEX is flexible and durable as it combines the elasticity of rubber and the wear resistance of polyurethane. Before mounting, every cup is paired with a special conductive fitting that comply with established anti-ESD requirements. Installation is nonetheless done the same easy way as with standard suction cups.

“With this integrated set-up, Piab facilitates the dissipation of harmful static electricity without adding any heavy equipment to the affected machinery. We are proud to offer this useful innovation to our automotive customers in a time when their sector is booming", concludes Anders Falk.

The new BXP ESD cups are available to configure and order on piab.com.
